TITLE:  Recreation Aid - NF-0189-I (Instructor)

LOCATION:  Outdoor Pool

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager and/or Pool Manager, conducts swim lessons, monitors students during swim lessons for the problems such as fatigue of struggle, demonstrates swim stokes and follows lesson plans as laid out by the American Red Cross. Works with parents/patrons to ensure each student is developing within the proper skill level. Monitors swimming areas, maintains order and enforces established rules of safety and behavior. Instructs, cautions and /or expels patrons as appropriate. Reports problems to pool manager. Uses a variety of techniques, in case of emergency, such as artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid. Notifies emergency medical services (EMS) and/or appropriate personnel for more serious accidents/injury. Uses equipment such as first aid kits, rescue tubes, shepherd’s crook and backboards. Verifies customers are authorized to use facility by checking appropriate identification, collects fees, makes change and registers individuals for appropriate level swim lessons. Cleans assigned areas (e.g., bathrooms, pool/pool decks, locker rooms, showers, outside areas, pool gutters etc.) according to established schedules and instructions.  Performs water chemistry checks according to established operating instructions and guidelines (e.g., chlorine/bromine, pH, temperature, etc.) and documents/reports findings.  Reports equipment/facility problems to appropriate personnel.  Guides are readily available, specific and require strict adherence and precise attention to detail.  Performs recurring work under the general supervision of the pool manager who will assigned duties and performs spot checks on a regular basis. On new tasks, the employee receives instructions concerning work methods and procedures to be followed. Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer first aid and CPR.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors and involves long periods of exposure to summer sun and chlorinated water.  May be required to work other than normal duty hours which include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.  Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must possess a current and valid American Red Cross (ARC) lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills and procedures.  Must possess current and valid ARC basic first aid and CPR certifications for the Professional Rescuer w/AED certification. CPR certification must include adult, child and infant procedures. All certifications must remain current during the period of employment.  Limited knowledge, acquired on the job, of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment and materials to perform standing and recurring tasks.  Some physical exertion is required in effecting a swimming rescue, must be able to lift and carry over 45 pounds.  Ability to safeguard, handle cash and some cash register experience is desirable. Satisfactory completion of National Agency Check is required. Position of Trust.
